Zack Snyder’s real SnyderVerse has nothing to do with that controversial handful of superhero epics.
Indeed Snyder recently put a final capper on his time as the creative voice behind the DCEU with his long-awaited Snyder Cut of Army of Thieves already dropping on Netflix.
Next up for the real SnyderVerse is another Army of the Dead prequel, this one a series entitled Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas. According to a just-revealed synopsis from Netflix Geeked, the next chapter in the Army of the Dead saga is “The animated origin story of Scott (Dave Bautista) and his rescue crew during the initial fall of Vegas as they confront the mysterious source of the zombie outbreak.” The same release says Jay Olivia will serve as showrunner for the series with he and Snyder each directing two episodes.
It was previously revealed that Bautista will be ed in the voice cast of Lost Vegas by returning Army of the Dead performers Ella Purnell, Ana de la Reguera, Tig Notaro and Omari Hardwick. The cast also includes some new actors playing characters not seen in Army of the Dead, including Joe Manganiello as Rose, along with Christian Slater, Vanessa Hudgens, Ross Butler, Yetide Badaki, Jena Malone, Nolan North and Ray Porter. Story-wise the show is expected to delve into the causes of the zombie outbreak, while also filling in more details about the nature of the zombies, and why some of them are more intelligent than others.
Indeed Army of the Dead was a movie that dived straight into the action without doing much work to flesh out its world or even explain why its zombie outbreak had happened. Clearly, these things were left vague so that subsequent movies and shows could fill in the blanks and create the sense of a slowly revealed universe filled with characters and stories that all end up doing their little part to make up the bigger picture. Surely this is a smart approach if one wants to craft a whole franchise that has a chance of continuing on into the future indefinitely. Then again, what ultimately matters is whether fans find the reveals themselves fascinating, or ultimately become bored by what is being offered. At the very least, Lost Vegas sounds like it will provide a lot more information about the Army of the Dead universe as a whole, but that of course doesn’t guarantee it will tell a compelling story in its own right.
