Summary

  • Matthew Vaughn reveals that Argylle 2 is still possible due to the first movie's strong performance on streaming.
  • Argylle was a major critical and commercial disappointment, and it will be a tall order for streaming performance to make up for this.
  • If another movie in the franchise does happen, Vaughn will probably have to find a way to make it for less money.

Argylle's reviews were overwhelmingly negative right out of the gate, and the film, which also stars Henry Cavill and Sam Rockwell, was a major disappointment at the box office.

In a recent interview with Empire, Vaughn comments on the chances of Argylle 2 after the first film's poor reception. According to the director, all hope is not yet lost for a sequel (or a Young Argylle spinoff) due to the movie's strong performance on streaming. Check out his full comment below:

"We’re doing very well on streaming. People are liking it. Nothing would make me happier than making another one. I’m getting texts saying, ‘Wow, those reviews were f---ing harsh!’ The more we can get people to watch Argylle, the more chance we make another one. I’d love to make another one, we’ve got it planned. It’ll make a good little movie. We’ll see. Never say never.”

Will Argylle 2 Actually Happen?

A Sequel Would Have One Major Difference From The Original

The Argylle ending clearly sets up further adventures for Conway and some key characters, but the film was a significant dud in theaters. The spy movie had an estimated budget of $200 million, making it a wildly expensive endeavor. To break even, according to the standard Hollywood blockbuster formula, Argylle would have had to make somewhere in the ballpark of $500 million to not only for the production budget, but also theaters' cuts of the gross and marketing expenses.

Argylle came nowhere close to this number. As of writing, Argylle's box office sits at a disastrous $96.2 million worldwide. In order to make up for this poor performance, Vaughn's film will not only have to perform well on VOD, but it will have to drive Apple TV+ subscriptions. Detailed stats in these two areas aren't really ever made public, but it's hard to imagine either will ever be high enough to move the needle as much as is necessary after the film fell so far short of expectations.

That being said, Vaughn clearly sees some hope when it comes to Argylle 2's chances and the further expansion of the franchise. If another movie does move forward, the biggest difference it would have from the first movie would be its price tag. Should Vaughn find a way to make Argylle 2 for about $81 million, which is estimated to be the budget of his first Kingsman movie, then the movie might stand a chance.
