The Netflix TV series, Arcane is ending after just two seasons.

While there are many Arcane’s final season 2 will release on multiple dates in November, following a three-act structure, but with no plans for season 3 or other projects announced, fans might want to find a replacement following Arcane’s conclusion.

Magic: The Gathering Can Be Netflix’s Perfect Arcane Replacement

A New Animated Series Is In Production With Picard's Showrunner

Although it was pushed back for over five years, Magic: The Gathering could be the perfect Netflix series replacement for Arcane. While rumors of a movie circulated in the early 2000s, Magic: The Gathering’s TV series was originally reported to be in production in 2019, but the series has been on rocky ground ever since, with ownership of Entertainment One changing and the Russo brothers leaving the production due to creative differences. However, during Netflix’s Geeked Week 2024, a new Magic: The Gathering Netflix animated series was announced, with Terry Matalas (Star Trek: Picard and Vision) listed as the showrunner:

The hugely popular card game Magic: The Gathering, which has enthralled millions of tabletop gamers for more than 30 years, is set to become an event animated series streaming on Netflix — and it’s currently in production with new creative direction from showrunner and executive producer Terry Matalas (Star Trek: Picard, 12 Monkeys).

Although many are glad season 2 will be the last so that the series doesn’t drag on, others think that Arcane deserves a longer run as it is the best animated show on Netflix. Therefore, Magic: The Gathering could offer a suitable replacement as the two series are both based on magic-themed games with a dedicated fanbase. As Netflix has had success with Arcane, there is hope that Magic: The Gathering will follow a similar vein to produce a fitting story, especially as Matalas’ previous project, Picard season 3, was highly rated with a 97% Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes.

Arcane Succeeded In Taking Simple Game Lore And Turning Into An Epic Story

The Netflix Series Focuses On Vi And Jinx

Arcane is a huge success for Netflix because it uses simple game lore and turns it into an epic story. The show has been praised for being accessible for both fans of the game and newcomers, as Arcane remains focused on Vi and Jinx in a simpler, yet epic story, and does not bombard viewers with too much lore. Furthermore, Vi’s teased fight with Warwick in season 2 all but solidifies Arcane’s reputation as it has the potential to be one of the most epic fights considering its long-rumored history and Vi’s trauma sending her beyond her breaking point.

Arcane: Cast & Character Guide

Based on the successful online game League of Legends, Arcane is one of the most creative animated TV shows on Netflix and has a great cast.

However, there are some mixed feelings regarding Arcane season 2 as it has been three years since the first season was released. Arcane managed to attract casual viewers as well as fans of the games, contributing towards its Emmy wins for its outstanding animation, which is something that is hard to achieve. Yet, despite its critical acclaim, Arcane will be ending with season 2, much to fans’ disappointment after a three-year wait. Therefore, as one of the few animated video game adaptations to succeed in creating such an epic story, the Netflix show will be missed by many.

Netflix Has Plenty Of Other Video Game Shows If You Already Miss Arcane

In recent years, Netflix has taken a liking to video game shows, meaning there are plenty of shows to watch that are like Arcane. The animated dark fantasy Castlevania spinoff, Castlevania: Nocturne, will be releasing season 2 in early 2025, which will follow another warrior of the Belmont family. Castlevania: Nocturne has achieved critical acclaim for its animation and follows a sibling relationship during the conflicts of the French Revolution, similar to Arcane, and offers another magical world for viewers. Additionally, a new Cyberpunk anime has just been announced by Netflix for those who are interested in an alternate genre.

Netflix’s animated shows demonstrate a rising trend in streaming platforms, as many are now capitalizing on video game stories. Other platforms such as Amazon and HBO have released Fallout and The Last of Us adaptations that have received positive reviews. However, Netflix stands out for its animated format, permitting more faithful adaptations without the physical limitations that come with a live-action series. Arcane will be missed when it ends in November, as it is one of the well-loved animated adaptations by game enthusiasts and casual viewers alike, although Netflix offers plenty of alternatives while waiting for more League of Legends content.
