DC unveils the first official Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom cast, allowing returning director James Wan to tell a suitable followup story.
That story takes shape in the Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom trailer, which has been released online by DC. The new footage reveals that Aquaman 2 picks up four years after the events of the first movie and find Arthur Curry (Momoa) as both a father and the King of Atlantis.
The trailer shows that when Black Manta returns (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) and threatens everything Arthur holds dear, the aquatic superhero teams up with his half-brother Orm (Patrick Wilson) in order to fight to protect Atlantis. In addition to the trailer, DC unveiled the official poster for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which can be viewed below.
Everything The Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom Trailer Reveals About The DC Movie
There are quite a few reveals in the Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom trailer, including Black Manta's villain weapon, the Black Trident, and Arthur breaking Orm out of prison. The main takeaway from the trailer, though, is how much it reveals about the plot of the movie. After Aquaman killed Black Manta's father in the first film, he was used in a pawn in the fight between Arthur and Orm, but now he's back and a full-blown villain in his own right. He aims to kill Aquaman's entire family and, as Orm says, end the bloodline.
That means Black Manta's intent is to kill Arthur's infant son, which is a storyline pulled from the DC comics. It would be a very tragic turn if Black Manta succeeded in killing Arthur's son to set up the final showdown between the hero and the villain. However, it might be too dark of a story for a movie that's meant to be family-friendly. Though Wan is known well for his horror fare, the Aquaman movies have skewed much lighter and more kid-friendly. That said, it wouldn't be a surprise if someone else were to die at Black Manta's hands, perhaps Arthur's father Tom (Temuera Morrison) or his mother Atlanna (Nicole Kidman).
Beyond Black Manta's plan for vengeance, the Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom trailer goes in depth explaining the history of the Black Trident. According to the explanation of its origin, it belonged to the king of another one of the seven kingdoms. The trident contains dark magic that affects everything surrounding it, and Black Manta wields it with the goal of destroying not only Arthur's family, but his entire kingdom. Thanks to Black Manta's new suit and the Black Trident, he'll be a formidable villain for Arthur, and it remains to be seen if the hero will be able to defeat him in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.
