In the fourth quarter of 2021, iPhone 13 and may come with a smaller notch. Several of the rumors and leaks that were proven wrong for the iPhone 12, may be correct when it comes to the next generation flagship to be released by Apple. Among them, was a suggestion that the infamous iPhone notch will be reduced in size. The notch is the rounded rectangle of black that dips down at the top of the iPhone 12's screen, which otherwise has fairly small bezels.

The iPhone X, released in 2017, was the first to eliminate the Home button, allowing for a much larger display. With the Home button gone, TouchID would either need to move to the back, similar to the fingerprint readers on Android phones, or be replaced entirely. Apple wanted to go big and chose to introduce FaceID which required additional hardware on the front of the screen in order to use depth mapping. To get the largest screen possible, this meant adding a notch. While not the first smartphone to make this concession, the iPhone does have a particularly large notch compared to Android phones of the time.

To this day, the notch that houses the TrueDepth camera feature of the iPhone 12. According to a recent report from MacOtakara, the notch will remain in the iPhone 13, although it may be narrower. While the degree of reduction was not specified, there was mention that the camera may shift up to be closer to the edge to allow for a two-to-four-millimeter reduction vertically, depending on how close to the edge it can be placed. The report referenced unnamed sources for this information, but it should be noted that MacOtakara correctly predicted several details of the iPhone 12 several months in advance of its release.

Clearly, a smaller notch would improve the look of the device and Apple has likely been working toward this since FaceID was first introduced. The same report suggested that the iPhone 13 body thickness may increase by about one-quarter of a millimeter. This is an almost imperceptible difference, but Apple loves thin devices, so there must be an important reason for this. Some leakers have supposed that the iPhone 13 might have an adaptive 120Hz refresh rate, which draws more power. A thicker battery would increase capacity and possibly offset that extra power requirement.

Apple is said to be keeping the iPhone 12 Pro Max and feature the same sensor-shift stabilization. With several months remaining before the iPhone 13 is announced, quite a bit may change, so it is too early to be certain of any leak at the moment.
