Rumors of a single-player game set in the Apex Legends universe have started doing the rounds following a Respawn Entertainment job listing, and there are a few Legends in the game that would be better than others to include. Apex Legends is beloved in large part thanks to its cast of diverse and interesting characters, each with unique abilities and backstories. These abilities and backstories have some that are better than others, and some are better suited to a single-player experience than others.
Apex Legends saw its initial release in 2019 and has been steadily updated since then. Most recently, the game got an update titled Apex Legends: Saviors, a significant step forward with a new Legend, Newcastle, new areas, and more. The game is one of the only battle royales to stand the test of time and has seen a few additional projects in the game's universe, including a port of the game to phones with Apex Legends: Mobile.
With new updates and projects came new Legends, and some are perfect for a single-player spinoff in the Apex universe. While multiple Legends could be playable in a single-player game, it seems more likely that the spinoff centers around a single Legend for story and gameplay. Because of this, some Legends are better for a single-player game than others, whether it's due to their current backstory or gameplay.
Valkyrie Spinoff Game Could Bring A Titanfall Connection To Apex Legends
Added in Season 9, Apex Legends: Legacy, Valkyrie is an obvious candidate for a single-player Apex spinoff. She has one of the richest backstories in the game, thanks mostly to her connection to the Titanfall franchise. With Titanfall fans losing hope for Titanfall 3, an Apex Legends spinoff centered around Valkyrie might be fans' next hope for a continuation of the franchise, and could even feature characters from the acclaimed story mode in Titanfall 2.
Valkyrie is the daughter of Viper, a Titan Pilot in the story mode of Titanfall 2. She even used the flight core from her father's Titan to create her jetpack, one of the abilities she uses in-game. While her father was portrayed as an antagonist in the game, Valkyrie seems to be a likable smuggler and morally gray hero. Her arrival in the game got even more players into the Titanfall franchise, with Titanfall 2's player count skyrocketing by 750% after her reveal in 2021.
In addition to her story, Valkyrie's selection of abilities also makes her a great selection for a single-player spinoff of Apex Legends. She uses her VTOL Jets to fly in the air, and Missile Swarm launches stunning and damaging rockets at her enemies. Both of these abilities are fun to use, particularly on groups of enemies. Especially without the restriction of multiplayer balancing, these abilities would be a blast to utilize in a PvE format.
Apex Legends Single-Player - Loba's Thieving Skills Would Make Her A Fun Anti-Hero
The Legend introduced in Season 5, Apex Legends: Fortune's Favor, Loba is another great choice for a single-player Apex experience. Her backstory centers around another character from Apex Legends, Revenant, who killed Loba's family when she was nine. This massacre left Loba with nothing, leading to her picking pockets to survive, gradually improving her thieving skills.
These thieving skills reached their peak when she stole a piece of technology called the Jump Drive. Armed with the new tech, Loba utilizes a teleportation bracelet to steal valuable treasures that she once believed were out of her reach. This story sets up a plot for a spinoff perfectly: a revenge story that sees Loba travel to Revenant body factories to destroy her family's assailant for good.
Loba brings a lot to the table gameplay-wise, too. Her Teleportation Bracelet has long been an ability that Respawn Entertainment has been trying to balance well, while still keeping it a viable ability. In Apex Legends' expansion beyond battle royale, Loba's Jump Drive could reach its highest potential and would make a Loba spinoff a fun game with great stealth and traversal mechanics.
A Revenant Game Could Focus On Apex Legends' Mercenary Syndicate
On the other hand, Revenant could explore the opposite side of the Apex Legends universe. The synthetic mercenary has a complex backstory, being more machine than man. This path has led him to become a mechanical killing machine, now killing for joy without reason.
Revenant wasn't always this way, though. He used to simply be a hitman, but slowly became the more mechanical mercenary seen in Apex Legends thanks to executives at the Mercenary Syndicate and Hammond Robotics. A Revenant spin-off game could focus on his hitman origins and his downfall at the hands of corporate overlords.
Some of Revenant's abilities transfer to a single-player environment pretty easily, as well. His extended climbing would make traversal fun. In addition, other synthetic skills could make a Revenant single-player game even more fun. In particular, Titanfall's wall running that was seen in a limited-time Apex Legends event in 2020 would be a great addition to Revenant's kit for a story-based experience.
Horizon's Technology & Time Travel Could Make A Compelling Apex Legends Spinoff
From Season 7, Apex Legends: Ascension, Horizon (also known as Dr. Mary Somers) is another protagonist rich in abilities and backstory making her a fantastic choice for a solo game in the Apex universe. She's an eccentric scientist with a joyful disposition. However, this joyousness is offset by the sadness of her reason for ing the Apex games.
A scientist experimenting to find solutions to an energy crisis, Dr. Somers eventually discovered a new element that she believed to be the key to limitless energy. The twist is that the element was only found in black holes. She and her apprentice embarked to find this element, and solve her world's energy crisis. However, she was betrayed by her apprentice (now known as the legend Ash), and emerged from the black hole 87 years later, after promising her son she would be home safely. This story sets up a great motivator for Horizon to time travel and find her son, as well as a great antagonist in the form of her apprentice.
Gameplay-wise, there's a ton of potential for Horizon. Her main Gravity Lift ability and enhanced air control would be a blast to play with in well-designed, tailor-made levels. In addition, the nature of Horizon being a scientist means that she can constantly have evolving technology to enhance her kit in both combat and traversal. Overall, the possibilities for a Horizon-led spin-off are nearly limitless.
Apex Legends characters come with unique and interesting backstories, abilities, and designs. There are tons of fantastic and diverse characters in Apex Legends, making it an excellent game to receive a single-player spinoff. In particular, Horizon, Revenant, Loba, and Valkyrie are standout Legends who would excel as protagonists of their own games. However, players won't know who the Apex Legends single-player experience may be led by until Respawn and Electronic Arts announce more about the project in the future.
