Google I/O conference conducted in May 2022, where enthusiasts got a glimpse of what the next in Android Auto would look like. However, it wasn't until November 2022 that the updated Android Auto was available for beta testing.

At its booth at Central Plaza-1, Google showcased the new Android Auto update on a BMW i7. Overall, the latest Android Auto interface prioritizes three things: navigation, communication, and entertainment. Building on that, Google places Maps closer to the driver's seat for easy access, i.e., towards the left of the infotainment screen. There's a new media player card that uses Google's Material You themes to display album art. In addition, the media card can resize if there is other information to show on the screen. s also get a quick launcher that helps them access recently-used apps, similar to what Android smartphones have.

Google has optimized the new Android Auto interface to adapt to different screen shapes, including widescreen, portrait, or other orientations. Google Assistant on Android Auto is better than ever. It provides intuitive suggestions, including quick replies and missed call reminders, which, otherwise, could occupy a lot more time. Further, Android Auto now shows shortcuts for arrival time-sharing and seamless access to play music or podcasts. Those who like listening to music during rides would love Android Auto's new seekable progress bar for audio tracks and podcasts.

In its blog, Google says that seekable audio playback is one of the most requested Android Auto features ever. Soon, s can make WhatsApp audio calls via Android Auto with the latest Android smartphones. Digital car key sharing, a feature that allows Pixel and iPhone s to share access to their car with friends and family, will soon be available for Samsung phones. In addition, Xiaomi s can share their digital car keys later this year. Google also says that digital car keys will make their way to more car brands in the near future.

Apart from this, Google is increasing third-party app for vehicles. For instance, the Waze app is now available on select Renault models. Last but not least, Google's HD maps are also available for select cars with Google built-in. All-in-all, s should expect a more refined driving companion from Google. As always, the update will take some time to be available for all Android Auto s.
