HBO has officially renewed Sex and the City follows four friends - Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda, and Samantha - as they navigate life, relationships, and love in New York City.
In December 2021, HBO Max debuted the sequel series And Just Like That, which explores the lives of Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte (sans Cattrall’s Samantha Jones) as they embark on a new decade of their lives. Helmed by Michael Patrick King, And Just Like That shocked its audience in episode 1 when Carrie’s husband, Mr. Big (Chris Noth), dies from a heart attack. Featuring storylines of life-changing revelations, divorce, alcoholism, and ageism, And Just Like That has received mixed reviews from viewers.
Now, it appears the Sex and the City reboot has more in store for Carrie Bradshaw. Per Variety, HBO Max has officially ordered And Just Like That season 2. The revival series, which concluded February 3, remains HBO Max’s most-streamed series ever. Parker, Nixon, and Davis are slated to return for the second installment and will continue to serve as executive producers on the series. At this time, And Just Like That season 2 has yet to announce a release date. Speaking on the renewal, King reveals he is excited to tell a fresh batch of stories for the characters. I am delighted and excited to tell more stories about these vibrant, bold characters — played by these powerful, amazing actors. The fact is, we’re all thrilled. And Just like That … our Sex life is back.
Longtime views of the iconic series have taken to social media to voice their criticisms for the HBO Max reboot. These complaints claim that And Just Like That failed to deliver Sex and the City’s comedic timing, poignant one-liners, and potent chemistry between its main characters. However, despite the complaints, enough viewers tuned in to the reboot and made it successful enough to warrant season 2.
Overall, Sex and the City was considered revolutionary for opening up conversations about sexuality, friendship, and female independence. The series developed a devoted fan base that appears to have remained invested in the outcomes of the And Just Like That characters. Of course, with how successful the series has been for HBO Max, it isn’t surprising that the show has been picked up for season 2. And Just Like That season 2 has a chance to return to the roots of Sex and the City and deliver the next chapter for Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte.
