The rise of Among Us sold more than 3 million units on the console in just one month. So, with all of this hype around it, can gamers walk into a retailer and buy an Among Us Nintendo Switch game card?
Physical game sales are still a vital part of today's gaming industry, despite a notable shift in trends recently. Digital games sales outnumbered physical sales for the first time in mid-2020, in large part due to the COVID-19 pandemic that led more consumers to shop online rather than visiting a store. Still, major game companies - like Electronic Arts and Take-Two Interactive - reported that just under half of their sales came from physical copies. InnerSloth, on the other hand, can't say the same.
Among Us is an exclusively digital game, which means gamers can't buy a Nintendo Switch game cartridge or a disc for other platforms. The game is only sold online in marketplaces like the Switch eShop, Steam, or mobile app stores. Anyone who wants physical Among Us memorabilia will need to buy apparel from InnerSloth, because the game will most likely never be released in a physical format.
Among Us: Will It Get A Physical Copy?
InnerSloth hasn't mentioned if it has any plans from making physical game cartridges for Among Us in the future. Still, considering how successful its digital sales have been and the size of InnerSloth's team, it's improbable. Among Us had half a billion active players in November 2020, all of which either ed the game for free on mobile or purchased a digital copy. There's no rush to make physical copies since InnerSloth's small team is already fully dedicated to dealing with its exponential growth as it is.
The indie dev studio hired Among Us has been a top-selling game on the Switch without physical copies.
For the time being, Among Us will remain exclusively digital and sell for $5 on the Switch eShop, the same price it retails for on Steam. Keep in mind that Among Us requires a Nintendo Online subscription to play, which costs $3.99 a month or $19.99 a year. That makes it more expensive than playing on PC, but makes the game accessible to millions of Switch owners. If InnerSloth is successful on console platforms, it could eventually make physical copies of its games, but right now it's only available online.
