Fans have been eagerly waiting for the Airship map to be added to Among Us for a long time. Once the Airship was officially unveiled at The Game Awards 2020 in December last year, expectations were high for Among Us' new map. After three months, the Airship finally has a March 31st, 2021, release date. Here's why Among Us' Airship took so long to release.
InnerSloth officially announced the Airship's release date in Among Us yesterday, finally putting an end to speculation the map was delayed or facing problems. While three months may seem like a long time to wait for a new map in Among Us, there were a number of contributing factors to explain why InnerSloth needed so much time to get the Airship ready.
Thanks to a dev post from scrapped plans for Among Us 2 to focus on making the first game even better. The studio went back to working on Among Us, but its sudden popularity slowed down production in multiple ways.
Why Among Us' Popularity Slowed Down The Airship's Release
Among Us' popularity meant that servers needed to be stabilized, more bugs needed to be fixed, and that InnerSloth was expanding the game to other platforms. As discussed in the dev post, this meant getting versions out for PC, multiple mobile devices and versions, and for the new Nintendo Switch port as well. All of this took time, which is why the Airship's ostensible delay was really just development being slowed down due to Among Us' popularity.
Another contributing factor is that InnerSloth is a small indie studio. Currently, there are only five people on staff, and the company wants to keep its team fairly small. As such, getting out new content like the Airship in Among Us takes more time than it would at a larger studio.
Thankfully, the wait for the Airship is almost over. The new map in Among Us is free for anyone who owns the game already, and it will feature new tasks, rooms, and other fun gameplay mechanics. The Airship is set to finally release in Among Us on March 31st, 2021.
