America's Got Talent season 20 premiered on May 27, and welcomed back host Terry Crews, along with judges Simon, Howie Mandel, Sofia Vergara, and Mel B. America's Got Talent judge Simon Cowell was booed by the audience after his comments about an especially emotional audition.

In an America's Got Talent early release shared via YouTube, Simon was booed for his initial after contestant Cole Swensen's audition. In the clip, Cole, 23, sang "Viva La Vida" by Coldplay while playing the guitar and accompanied by his mother, Judy, on the cello. Cole explained that a big reason that he pursues music is his mom. She gave up her career and dream of music, and now he was there to take her place.

After Cole and Judy's performance, Howie and Mel B gave them a standing ovation, along with the audience, and Judy was moved to tears. Mel B told Cole that he had a really distinctive tone in his voice, and he controlled it and sailed through the song and made it his own.

Howie said that he loved Cole's rendition of the song as much as the original, and that seeing love on the stage made his heart explode. He said that it was beautiful, and Sofia agreed. She added that it was amazing to see a family come together, and the love that they had between them made her emotional.

Simon then began his critique by saying, "I think this would've been a really good audition on your own." The audience booed, while Mel B. shouted, "What?! That's mean! What about Judy?!" As the audience chanted, "Judy!," Simon continued, "It would've been a really, really good audition if you had just sang this on your own."

Simon then unexpectedly showered Cole with praise, adding, "However, with your mom, it was a great audition. It made everything--I don't know--way more interesting, and actually made you, in my opinion, very cool to do that. Because you're not following the herd. You're doing what you wanna do, and that makes you stand out. I loved it. Really loved it." Cole then received four votes of yes from the judges.

Simon Gave The Perfect Critique

Simon has always been known as a reality TV villain since his days as an American Idol judge, so it was no surprise when his critique didn't seem to match the other America's Got Talent judges' positive reviews of Cole's performance. However, he executed his praise perfectly by tricking the audience because it built suspense and made the positive even more special. Simon tricking the audience means that he knows how to entertain, which makes him the ideal singing competition show judge.

Our Take On AGT Audience Booing Simon Cowell

Simon Would've Deserved The Jeers If He'd Criticized Cole For Performing With His Mom

I think that the America's Got Talent audience would've been right to boo Simon if he were really telling Cole that he shouldn't have performed with his mom. She added so much to his song musically with her cello, and emotionally by helping him to show their close bond. The audience knew that they'd just witnessed something special, so they wanted to protect Cole from Simon's wrath. Thankfully, it turned out to be unnecessary because Simon loved Cole and Judy's performance just as much as everyone else did.

America's Got Talent airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. EDT on NBC.
