- Release Date
- April 4, 1997
- Director

After Kevin Smith hit it big with Clerks and then struggled somewhat with the follow-up, Mallrats, he set his eyes on a more traditional rom-com. However, Smith didn't take an easy topic as he chose to direct a movie about a straight man who falls in love with a gay woman. Chasing Amy is slightly problematic today, as Holden (Ben Affleck) tries everything he can to win Alyssa (Joey Lauren Adams) over despite her sexuality, but at its heart, that is the purpose, as the man realizes that isn't how the world works.
Smith saw his greatest early success with Chasing Amy, and it remains one of his top critically acclaimed releases. It received a Criterion Collection release and Smith won Best Screenplay at the Independent Spirit Awards for the script, while Jason Lee won for Best ing Actor.

The movie then has Lavelle set out to prove he is worthy of her love.
While not as successful as the original, Coming 2 America has plenty of laughs, including the barbershop friends getting back together again, and it actually has some smarter comedy than the original when it comes to breaking stereotypes. However, when she skips her court date to chase the lead on a possible murder cover-up, her ex-husband Milo is sent out to bring her in, something he is more than happy to do.

9 The Wedding Planner (2001)
Starring Matthew McConaughey & Jennifer Lopez
Matthew McConaughey was the biggest male romantic comedy star in 2001 and Jennifer Lopez was rising fast at the time. That made their pairing in 2001's The Wedding Planner a big deal and the movie ended up as a breezy, yet familiar rom-com trope. Mary (Lopez) is a wedding planner who is hired to be the planner for a wealthy heiress, only to find out that her fiancé is a man who saved her from an accident that she fell for. This puts her in a tough spot, as her future in her company is on the line.
