Alien: Romulus’ Place In Franchise Timeline Clarified By Director

Summary

  • Isabela Merced teases that she's in a scene in Alien: Romulus that her castmates struggled to watch due to its graphic content.
  • The Alien movie takes place between the first two installments in the franchise, following young people as they face off against a Xenomorph.
  • Director Fede Álvarez's past films suggest that his take on the franchise will be bloody and gory, with potentially more pure horror elements.

Alien: Romulus star Isabela Merced teases a gross-out scene from the installment in the sci-fi franchise. After a series of sequels and prequels, the last of which was Ridley Scott's Alien: Covenant in 2017, the new movie from director Fede Álvarez will serve as a reset of sorts, telling a story between the events of Alien and Aliens. The film, which will tell a standalone story, follows a group of young people from a distant planet as they encounter a Xenomorph for the first time.

As the Alien: Romulus release date inches closer, Merced teases in an interview with THR what audiences can expect from the new movie. While the actor doesn't share any specific story details, she does promise that she's featured in one scene that had her fellow castmates struggling to watch. Check out Merced's full comment below:

“It ends up being a little bit complicated, obviously, as all Alien movies do, however, yeah, you’ll see us together at times. When we were doing reshoots, Fede Álvarez gave me the iPad where he watches playback, and he had the movie pulled up. So I told him I wanted to see parts of it, and he showed it to me. I was the one holding the iPad, and there were ten people around me watching it on the iPad.

“So there’s a scene that I’m in, and they all had to turn away. Not one person stayed looking at that iPad because it was so disgusting. And I was watching it like this … (Merced pretends to hold an iPad with a mesmerized look on her face.) I was so excited. (Laughs.)

“I love sci-fi, I do. So he let me watch half the movie on the iPad. I said [to Fede], ‘If the iPad is heavy, I can carry it for you. I can hold it.’ (Laughs.) So I’m really, really excited for that one. Again, I’m lucky enough to be a part of these projects with the best of the best. I can’t believe it. I’m so in shock, and I don’t know when I’m going to wake up."

What To Expect From Alien: Romulus

The New Movie Won't Be Like Prometheus & Alien: Covenant

A Xenomorph Attacks Ripley and Dillon in Alien 3

Relatively few details have been released regarding the new film's story, but the film will take the Alien franchise in a new direction after Scott's Prometheus and Alien: Covenant proved divisive. This likely means it won't be delving into the Engineers or the lore behind the creation of the Xenomorphs, instead telling a back-to-basics style story reminiscent of 1979's Alien.

Alien is currently available to stream on Hulu.

As far as the Alien: Romulus cast, Merced is one of a number of young actors who will be carrying the new story. She is ed by Cailee Spaeny, Archie Renaux, David Jonsson, Aileen Wu, and Spike Fearn. The names of the characters these actors will be playing have not yet been revealed, but past Alien movies would suggest that not all of these newcomers will make it to the end credits alive.

As far as tone, Álvarez's past movies could provide a fairly good indication of what is to come. The filmmaker is behind 2013's Evil Dead and 2016's Don't Breathe, suggesting Alien: Romulus won't skimp out on the blood and gore, and more pure horror elements. In addition to Alien: Romulus, an Alien TV show is in the works, though these two projects are seemingly not connected and will be telling very different stories. More information regarding Álvarez's film is sure to arrive as the release date approaches.
