Warning: This post contains spoilers for the Agents of SHIELD series finale.
Agents of SHIELD attempted to use SWORD in their earlier seasons. Debuting in 2013, Agents of SHIELD ushered in a new era for Marvel when it became the first television show set within the MCU. During the first season, its connections to the greater universe were more frequent, but as the show went on Agents of SHIELD firmly became its own thing. Now, after seven seasons, Agents of SHIELD has come to an end with Wednesday night's two-part series finale.
SHIELD has been a part of the MCU since the very beginning, but it isn't the only major organization with an elaborate acronym to exist within the universe. WandaVision is already confirmed to feature SWORD in some capacity.
However, it turns out Agents of SHIELD was almost the one to introduce SWORD to the MCU. As the Agents of SHIELD finale left Daisy Johnson (Chloe Bennet) acting as an ambassador in space, some began to wonder if she's now working for SWORD. According to TVLine, that isn't the case, but executive producer Jeffrey Bell did share that "We tried S.W.O.R.D. early [in the series] and we were shut down." Most likely, the powers that be at Marvel were interested in holding onto SWORD for the movies.
Agents of SHIELD co-showrunner Jed Whedon joked he would be willing to return for an Agents of SWORD spin-0ff, which some fans have already considered as a way to bring the characters of SHIELD into the greater MCU. The Agents of SHIELD series finale ended with everyone heading off on their own paths, but with Daisy still active in the field along with Mack (Henry Simmons) and Yo-Yo (Natalia Cordova-Buckley), there could be some ways to write them into future MCU projects.
For now, though, there are no immediate plans to revisit the agents of SHIELD. Instead, the MCU is moving towards SWORD. In Far From Home, Fury hinted at an incoming extraterrestrial threat from the Kree that could serve as the next major MCU event. If that's the case, then SWORD is poised to play a major part in what's to come. Fans will get a proper introduction to the organization when WandaVision arrives, but it's fun to know Agents of SHIELD tried to do it first.
