As its name implies, Age of Empires 3: Knights of the Mediterranean will allow players to explore the Mediterranean region with two new civilizations. Also included is the game's first-ever set of Historical Maps. Described as a new variation of Age of Empire 3's Random Maps, each Historical Map will feature unique objectives based on actual historical conflicts. The Napoleonic Wars and the Eighty Years’ War are a couple of notable examples. Other features of the Knights of the Mediterranean expansion include:
- 2 new Civilizations - the Italians and the Maltese

- Tycoon Game mode
Age of Empires 3's Diplomacy game mode is a new twist on the game's standard multiplayer formula. In it, players can change their diplomacy toward others during the match. Tycoon mode, on the other hand, is a more casual option. Rather than focusing on military gameplay, Age of Empires 3 players can instead lean into their civilization's economics. Between these changes and the multitude of minor updates coming to the latest expansion, Age of Empires fans should have plenty of exciting content to explore when Knights of the Mediterranean comes out on May 26.
