Not only has Adam Sandler never won an Academy Award, but he has never even been nominated, but one of his movies could give him another chance. The comedy actor and former Saturday Night Live performer has starred in tons of iconic '90s and 2000s comedies, and his style of comedy has become a brand. While he's known for his silly performances and putting on goofy accents, such as Bobby Boucher, Jr. in The Waterboy and Zohan in You Don't Mess with the Zohan, he has been known to play dramatic roles from time to time too, though they're relatively few and far between.
His stand-out performances have helped those films win some major awards, as Punch-Drunk Love earned Paul Thomas Anderson a Best Director win at Cannes Film Festival, and Uncut Gems won a ton of awards across the board. But though those films got Sandler tons of acclaim, they never earned him an Academy Award nomination, despite deserving one for both movies. Sandler has a few Golden Rasberry Awards on his mantelpiece, but few serious awards that recognize his talent. However, of his four movies, one of them could give Sandler his best shot at getting an Oscar nod yet.
Adam Sandler's Trading Card Movie Could Be An Oscar Contender
Sandler's closest shot at getting nominated for an Oscar was in the Safdie brothers-directed Uncut Gems. It was a brave role, as Sandler wasn't afraid to make himself look so pathetic in a non-comedic role. Sandler played Howard Ratner in the 2019 movie, and the character was a low-life, lying, cheating, gambler who repeatedly put himself before his family. The comedy actor absolutely disappeared into the dramatic role, but it wasn't recognized by the academy. Before the nominations were revealed, Sandler even half-jokingly threatened to intentionally make a bad movie if he wasn't nominated for an Academy Award.
However, the Safdie brothers will be working with Sandler again for their next project. The actor is reuniting with the visionary filmmakers for an untitled movie about trading cards. Not much is known about the movie other than that Sandler is excited about it, it'll feature Megan Thee Stallion, and that it could be extremely long. Sandler explained that the Safdie brothers' script is 340 pages long. As the industry standard is that one page equates to one minute of screen time, that means that the movie will potentially be five hours and 40 minutes. Either way, the Safdie brothers got a powerful performance out of Sandler once, and it sounds like it’ll happen again.
3 Of Adam Sandler’s 4 Movies Are Netflix Comedies
Unfortunately, while Adam Sandler's movie with the Safdie brothers could potentially lead to an Oscar nomination, it's the only one of his next four movies that stands a chance. The actor's other movies are Netflix exclusives. One is You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah, which is a comedy based on a Young Adult novel, another is The Out-Laws, a heist comedy from the director of The Wrong Missy, and the final Netflix movie is Leo, an animated movie about a lizard. Ironically, Leo has the strongest chance of an Oscar nom, as the previous Best Animated Picture winner was Netflix's Pinocchio. Nevertheless, this slate suggests that the Safdie project remains Sandler's best prospect of Oscars glory.
