Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse broke many records, far suring the original film's box office to become Sony Animation's biggest movie ever, setting up next year's sequel, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, nicely. The movie's ending also provided a shocking bridge to the next film, with the debut of a Prowler variant of Miles, but the film's original plans for that variant reveal that the ending tricked fans.

On Twitter, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse character designer Kris Anka shared concept art for the Miles Morales variant that debuts at the end of the film.

According to the artist, that Miles variant was not always destined to be the Prowler, with the team behind the movie originally envisioning the character as "an athletic vigilante." This seems to make it clear that the Prowler variant of Miles is not actually a villain as Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse's ending led to believe, with the film tricking the audience into believing that Miles was in danger to build suspense for next year's sequel.

Why Beyond The Spider-Verse Is More Interesting With Two Hero Miles Variants

Miles G. Morales as the Prowler in Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse ending

Despite what Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse's ending led fans to believe, Prowler Miles, or Miles G. Morales, is a vigilante, not a villain. That does not mean that the character shares the same exact morals as the main Miles Morales, as the Spider-Verse sequel showed the character to have a darker edge to him; however, that reveal sets up an interesting aspect for Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.

The threequel will feature two hero Miles variants of sorts, with each one going by their own code, and both serving to show that despite not having been destined to become Spider-Man, which Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse cemented was the case, the character manages to become a hero, be it with spider powers, the vigilante athleticism of his Prowler variant, or something else, in different universes.

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse should hammer on the point that anyone could be a hero by revealing the Prowler Miles' actual goals and his past as a vigilante, showing how alike and different he actually is to the Spider-Man Miles. With Gwen Stacy variants teased for the film, it will be interesting to see multiple variants of the animated franchise's two main characters, with a deeper look at Prowler Miles' life after Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse's trick ending.
