The Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse sequel has seen an overwhelmingly positive reception from audiences and critics alike. The movie has already broken several records throughout its run, with Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse now being Sony Animation's biggest movie ever, as the film has sured the $600 million mark at the worldwide box office. The animated film has also managed to beat a superhero record from the biggest cinematic event in history, Avengers: Endgame, showing just how much the Spider-Verse team delivered with Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
Across The Spider-Verse Had A Stunning Number Of Spider-Man Cameos
Speaking with Empire Magazine for its August 2023 Issue, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse co-director Justin K. Thompson revealed that the animated movie included an astonishing 630 different versions of Spider-Man. The director then explained that not all the Spider-Man variants were unique, as there are some variations of existing designs to fill the background of some scenes. Still, Thompson confirmed that from the 630 Spider-Man variants present in the film, around 150 of them were named characters designed for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Check out the full quote below:
"If we take the sequence as a whole, there are over 600 different spiders. It's somewhere in the neighbourhood of 630-ish... But some of that is just variations, to fill in the background... If you're talking about named characters, our character designers had designs of 150 or so."
Avengers: Endgame is the biggest superhero movie crossover in live-action, uniting heroes from all over the MCU to battle Thanos. While the movie presents a huge roster of characters, it did not come close to having even 100 named characters throughout its runtime, with 36 main characters in Avengers: Endgame's final battle, let alone reaching Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse's 150 named character's mark, or its more than 600 Spider-Man variants.
Across The Spider-Verse Directors Name Their Favorite Variants
During the interview, two of the animated movie's co-directors revealed which Spider-Man variants were their favorites. Thompson thought the original creation for the movie, Samurai Spider-Man, looked cool. He also laughed when ing how Peter Parkedcar made his way into the movie, saying, "From the beginning I was like, 'Can we have Peter Parkedcar?' Can he look like a Hanna-Barbera cartoon?'" As for co-director Joaquim Dos Santos, he was happy that Andy Samberg's "specific version of Scarlet Spider made it into the film." While Samberg's Ben Reilly was different from the character in the comics, he was also definitely a fun addition to Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
