Why You Should Watch A24's Hereditary

Toni Collette's Performance Is Still One Of The Most Powerful Of Her Career

Even with six years and a large library of other horror titles behind it, Ari Aster's Hereditary still remains one of not only A24's best in the studio's history, but also the horror genre at large. In his feature directorial debut, the filmmaker displayed a remarkable grip on balancing the more shocking elements of its horror setting with a moving exploration of grief, family dysfunction and emotional processing.

[Hereditary] came in the midst of many other horror movies finding their female leads singled out for praise...

Arguably, one of the main reasons to watch Hereditary is for Toni Collette's lead performance. That's not to say the entire cast surrounding the Oscar nominee aren't also in top form, but her work as the grieving Graham matriarch Annie is among her best, even though it was snubbed for multiple major awards, a fact that has sparked repeated outcry on social media. It also came in the midst of many other horror movies finding their female leads singled out for praise among their ensembles, with other examples including Lupita Nyong'o in Us and Florence Pugh in Aster's follow-up, Midsommar.

The other major reason why Hereditary is a great watch for those that haven't already seen it is the unpredictable nature of the movie's plot. Despite being promoted and set up as a typical haunted house horror story, the more audiences learn about Annie's mother and feel her ongoing influence on the family, the more they begin to question what's really going on, all the way up to the movie's final twist that is sure to leave jaws on the floor for first-time viewers.

What ScreenRant has said about Hereditary:

In of directorial style, Aster's approach very much hails from the same Kubrickian school of horror filmmaking that recent additions to the genre like The Witch subscribe to. As such, Hereditary by and large eschews cheap jump scare tactics in favor of building dread and tension through quieter techniques, in the lead-up to the film's most outright disturbing and violent moments. — Hereditary Review: Toni Collette's Family Has Serious Issues
