What Critics Like About A Quiet Place: Day One

The Horror Prequel Didn't Feel Like A Retread To Reviewers

Despite being a horror blockbuster film, many critics note that what makes the film work is its human drama and the central relationship in the story, grounded by superb performances from Quinn and the Academy Award-winning Nyong'o. The heartfelt humanity in A Quiet Place: Day One's characters distinguishes the prequel from other apocalyptic fare that prioritizes spectacle over substance. As character-driven as it is, there is still plenty of suspense and chaotic carnage.

Critics were also won over by the prequel being a refreshing change of pace for the franchise, expanding on the original premise and established lore in inventive ways without simply retreading what had already been done. Centering on new characters, changing the setting to New York City, and having the story set at the very beginning of the alien invasion all make it feel different while still being a worthy addition to the popular franchise. Credit is given to Sarnoski, whose direction and writing make the prequel feel distinct.

Even with the high bar set by the previous films, many critics say that A Quiet Place: Day One rivals its predecessors, with some even saying that it is their favorite installment yet. There is an eagerness and curiosity to see where the franchise might go next, a significant accomplishment at a time when many other franchises are eliciting fatigue. If the positive critical reviews continue and if A Quiet Place: Day One does well at the box office, that curiosity may be rewarded with another expansion of the franchise.
