This article contains spoilers for 9-1-1 season 8, episode 6, "Confessions"
9-1-1 star Ryan Guzman talks about that pivotal scene between Eddie and Buck that closes out 9-1-1 season 8, episode 6. Titled "Confessions", the sixth installment of the season represents a bit of a reversal in the mood of the two friends. Eddie (Guzman) has finally taken steps to allow himself to experience joy, while Buck (Oliver Stark) is feeling a bit depressed after the end of yet another romantic relationship. Buck shows up at Eddie's door in the final minutes of "Confessions", and the two friends share a beer.
In an interview with Screen Rant's Rachel Foertsch, Guzman reflects on the scene between Buck and Eddie. Asked to elaborate on the significance of what the two 9-1-1 characters are going through, the actor elaborates on how the two of them are having very different experiences:
Going towards where Eddie was in his head at that time—he's in a moment of bliss. Nothing can bother him. There's not one ounce of trouble in the world. And then, on the other spectrum, it's Buck who has had the worst day of his life, a horrible time, and he wants to do what he wants to do, which is go to his best friend. But I kind of like that he just walks right past him and they just sit in their silence and one's living his best dream, and the other one's living his nightmare.
Guzman also previews what's in store for Eddie and Buck, with the latter mourning his relationship and Eddie exploring his own happiness. In the quote below, Guzman talks about how Eddie used to hold onto the past and now Buck finds himself in that position:
You see two different avenues. You see one person really holding onto the past, which is what Eddie used to do, and then you have another person just living his best life, doing whatever he's got to do. So it'll be a great opposition to play between Buck and Eddie.
What The Final Scene Means For Eddie & Buck
It's A New Beginning
Since the 9-1-1 season 7 finale, Eddie has been in a state of mourning over the fact that his son Christopher (Gavin McHugh) has decided to live in Texas with his grandparents. Eddie speaks of Christopher as though he's gone forever, punishing himself, which becomes more evident as the episode progresses. With the help of a priest (played by Gavin Stenhouse), Eddie begins to allow for the fact that he's been too harsh on himself.
"Confessions" is written by Andrew Meyers and directed by Chad Lowe.
This culminates with Guzman doing a tribute to the seminal scene in the Tom Cruise movie Risky Business, rocking out, mustache-free, when no one is looking. This is contrasted with Buck, who has once again opened his heart only to be gently rebuffed by Tommy (Lou Ferrigno Jr.) who ends their six-month relationship. It's a reversal of fortune, which paves the way for the two friends' arcs separately and together. Eddie, now, is the one in a position to help Buck move on.
Our Take On The Eddie & Buck Scene
It's Pitch Perfect
So much of the Buck and Eddie friendship has been tied to big, life-changing moments. There's the time Buck and Chris survived a tsunami or when Buck watched as Eddie was hit by a sniper. However, just as important to the fan-favorite pairing are the small and even wordless scenes that showcase how much the two buddies mean to one another. The latest development, with hopes for 9-1-1 season 9's renewal pending, reaffirms that beautifully. It demonstrates, without dialogue, without a long set-up, how vital their relationship is.
9-1-1 season 8 airs Thursdays at 8 PM ET on ABC and streams on Hulu.
