Seinfeld was created in 1989 by Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld and aired for nine seasons until 1998. The series is often called a "show about nothing" because it centers around very average people living very average lives in New York City's upper west side. Despite having very basic or general plots for every episode, it has been regarded as one of the most influential sitcoms in television history because it found a way to take the monotonous and make it hysterical.
The main characters, Jerry, Elaine, George, and Kramer have very distinct personalities and points of view and these characters really made the show the success that it was. All nine seasons are available to stream on Hulu, but, for fans looking to change it up a little, here are ten films to check out.
Dumb and Dumber
One of fans' favorite characters from the series is Kramer, played by Michael Richards. Kramer is always the butt of every joke and usually sets himself up for it unintentionally. Kramer isn't the brightest bulb, which makes him an easy target for Jerry's jokes and life's mishaps. Fans who love the Dumb and Dumber.
The Hangover
Seinfeld didn't originally premiere to rave reviews, and it took a couple of seasons for fans and critics to catch on to the brilliance of this show. One of the reasons for that is because the main characters didn't follow the basic television formula.
They weren't very likable and seemed to always make very questionable decisions. It took some time, but audiences eventually saw The Hangover.
It Could Happen To You
New York City played a big part in this series' success, as it made the city part of the cast. The city comes to life in this series with the characters visiting popular destinations and even creating some of their own, like the diner they meet at in almost every episode.
The diner is a home base for the show, much like the diner in the film It Could Happen to You, starring Nicholas Cage and Bridget Fonda. Fans who love NYC will love this film as well for the way it depicts the city.
You've Got Mail
You've Got Mail is another romantic comedy that embraces New York City and all it has to offer. It also shows two people with some unlikeable qualities, driving each other crazy, and then falling in love. The chemistry between Meg Ryan's Kathleen Kelly and Tom Hanks' Joe Fox will remind Seinfeld fans of the on-again-off-again nature of Jerry and Elaine's relationship, which was a romantic comedy itself.
Bee Movie
Jerry Seinfeld has a lot of success as a stand-up comedian prior to this series, which is how this show got made. NBC had been following Seinfeld's career, and, once he gained some traction and a solid fanbase, the network approached him and asked him to develop his own series.
The success of Seinfeld is largely attributed to Jerry's skills as a comedian and his ability to produce hysterical content. For fans wanting more from this comedic mastermind, the children's animated comedy, Bee Movie, created by Seinfeld and starring himself and some other recognizable voices, like Michael Richards, is a must-watch.
Downhill
Julia Louise Dreyfus became a household name as Elaine on this hit series. Her dry humor and her ability to stand her ground in a man's world made her a role model for women and someone that fans and critics alike respected. Dreyfus has gone on to have an incredible career with much praise and many awards from her peers. For fans of Julia and her portrayal of Elaine, her newest feature, Downhill, a black comedy also starring Will Ferrell, would be great to watch in between binging old episodes of Seinfeld.
Father's Day
Julia Louise Dreyfus also co-stars in this late 90s comedy, also starring Robin Williams and Billy Crystal. This feature film, about a woman who tells two different men that they are the father of her son and enlists both to help her find the boy who has gone missing, delivers a lot of laughs.
It also examines the family dynamic and addresses a lot of important themes through comedy. In that way, fans of Seinfeld are sure to love this film as well.
Pretty Woman
Jason Alexander has had an impressive career, with Seinfeld being one of many memorable roles for the actor. George Costanza was probably the least liked character for his sappy, defeated nature and his ability to make almost everything about himself. Alexander brings those same qualities to the 90s classic Phillip, Richard Gere's slimy lawyer.
This Is The End
When the Seinfeld gang gets in trouble individually, they always seem to help each other out. But, when they collectively find themselves in the same bad situation, it's not only very funny to watch, but it keeps audiences on the edge of their seats wondering how it could possibly turn out in their favor. Fans who enjoy both the comedy and suspense of disaster-related situations will appreciate This is the End.
Tag
It seems as though nothing could ever get in the way of Jerry, Elaine, George, and Kramer's friendship, and fans often hope for a movie spin-off of the series so we can all check-in with our favorite foursome and relive the good ol' days.
For fans who appreciate Tag will not only make you laugh a lot, but it will also make you nostalgic for your high school friend group.
