A CD Projekt Red developer confirmed Project Golden Nekker, game codenamed Project Golden Nekker first entered the public conscious earlier this year, when CD Projekt Red partnered with IGN to announce an all-new Gwent title boasting a "captivating single-player experience." Details about the studio's next Witcher-branded endeavor remain scant, though developers noted it bears no connection to Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales. Whatever Project Golden Nekker entails, players can expect to get their hands on it by this year's end.
The crew at CDPR introduced Gwent to the game universe in 2015's The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, offering an addictive collectible card game that turned into an obsession for some players. Since then, two standalone Gwent experiences have gone to market, namely Gwent: The Witcher Card Game and the aforementioned Thronebreaker. The former expands upon the existing card game while the latter throws role-playing mechanics and a 30-hour story into the mix. Evidently, the team has discovered yet another way to explore the storytelling capabilities of the fan-favorite card game.
While speaking on CD Projekt Red's latest This Week in Gwent stream (via IGN), Game Director Vladimir Tortsov told Comms Lead Paweł Burza the studio currently has no plans to launch Project Golden Nekker on consoles. Torstov said ing Gwent: The Witcher Card Game's live-service offerings on console proved a "really tough experience," which explains why the title left PS4 and Xbox One in the summer of 2020. The Game Director continued, "overall, since we’re not there, we’re not planning to bring any of our spinoffs to consoles at this point."
Tortsov's comments confirm what many expected from the outset - the next Gwent game will only be available on mobile and PC platforms. At the time of writing, though, other specifics remain under lock and key. Most notably, outside of promising a 2022 launch window, CD Projekt Red has yet to announce when exactly the new title will hit digital stores.
While this particular Witcher game will skip consoles when it arrives later this year, the studio does have another title in the works that will eventually see the light of day on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S hardware. CDPR announced a fourth mainline Witcher game several weeks ago, complete with a teaser image that hinted at a focus on the Lynx Witcher School, a School derived from the creative works of fan-fiction.
The Witcher's next Gwent spinoff hits PC, Android, and iOS in 2022.
