- Corona's artistic style is a perfect fit for the franchise, bringing an organic quality to the mechanical characters.
Daniel Warren Johnson has been killing it during his run as writer and artist of the new Transformers series from Skybound Entertainment, which relaunched the franchise to new levels of success and acclaim. Now, Skybound has announced that artist Jorge Corona will be picking up the art duties for Johnson’s scripts, as the Robots in Disguise continue to find their way in the Energon Universe.
Announced on Skybound’s website and shared to the artist's Instagram page, Jorge Corona will be taking up the art chores beginning with Transformers #7, due out April 10. Corona’s run as artist will officially kick off the second arc of the series. The acclaimed first arc will conclude with the publication of Transformers #6 in March.
While Daniel Warren Johnson will no longer be drawing Transformers, he is staying on as writer for future issues. When asked about Corona stepping on board as the new series artist, Johnson had this to say:
“It’s a rare breed of artist that can naturally bring an organic quality to things that are inherently mechanical, and Jorge is one of those chosen few…Prepare your eyes for a feast of brawn and beauty, my friends. This man draws a mean-looking Soundwave. KA BAM!”
Jorge Corona Is the Perfect Choice To Follow Daniel Warren Johnson On Transformers
For Jorge Corona, the project was an easy one to say, “Yes” to: “It started with a ‘Do you want to work on a book with Daniel Warren Johnson?’ and just in case that wasn’t a deafening ‘YES,’ they added: ‘It’s for the TRANSFORMERS book.’” Corona goes to explain what Transformers means to him personally, highlighting the characters as what makes the franchise special:
“Growing up with TRANSFORMERS and its many iterations expanded in many ways what a cartoon could do for me. Even though it had the classic good vs. evil premise, it also added malleability to what the characters could do in that world. Betrayals, regrets, self-doubts, were all emotions that drove these characters and it added a complexity that I wasn’t familiar with in other shows. Fast forward to 30 years later and here I am seeing Daniel’s take on the franchise, rooted in his love for the original Generation One version, and it’s like reliving those childhood memories multiplied by a thousand. I am very honored and humbled to be a part of this project and cannot wait to share all of the craziness that’s coming up in the book.”
Corona has made a name for himself with his work on projects like Middlewest, The Me You Love in the Dark and Robin, with his energetic line-work wowing readers across various publishers. Corona’s style will be the perfect complement to Johnson’s work on the first arc of Transformers, as the artist has the same organic approach that will give life to both the humans and robots alike.
“A Feast of Brawn and Beauty”: The Art of Jorge Corona
Corona shows off the first look at his run with his cover for Transformers #7, which looks to continue the story in exciting ways. Front and center is Optimus Prime with his newly-attached arm from Megatron, as well as Cliffjumper, Arcee, Ratchet and Jazz. Perhaps most surprising is the appearance of Elita-1, a classic G1 character who has yet to appear in the series thus far. Whatever comes next in the Energon Universe saga, fans won’t want to miss the debut of Jorge Corona as the new artist of Transformers alongside writer Daniel Warren Johnson.
