The Avengers have had their share of controversial moments over the years, but one of Marvel’s biggest editors has just explained why one particular Ant-Man moment that some fans hate isn’t going to be changed. It’s a great demonstration of all the behind-the-scenes thinking that goes into comics. It’s also a chance to look at the larger concept of retcons and when they work, and more importantly, when they don’t.

Evangeline Lilly is seemingly leaving the Marvel Cinematic Universe, prompting speculation over who could replace her in time for Avengers 5. Evangeline Lilly has announced that she is "stepping away" from acting, including her role as Hope van Dyne, aka the Wasp in the MCU timeline. This poses a problem for the MCU's future, in which Lilly's Wasp was assumed to play a pivotal role. However, several actors would be particularly adept at taking over the role seamlessly, perhaps even using the MCU's multiverse to integrate a new Hope van Dyne into the franchise.

When Marvel Comics' 2008 crossover Secret Invasion happened, it claimed the life of a founding Avenger, the Wasp, which was especially heartbreaking because she was barely even involved in the story. This "shock death" is emblematic of several problems with major comic crossover events of the era, and the carelessness with which female characters are often treated in comics. It’s also a metatextual examination of Marvel’s most contentious relationship, though that’s still no excuse for what happens.

The MCU has confirmed the key differences between Ant-Man's suit and the notable upgrades seen with the Wasp's suit. Although both suits use Pym particles to shrink and grow, Hope van Dyne's suit has a lot more going for it than Scott Lang's does. Although they were both built by genius inventor Hank Pym, it's recently been revealed why Scott's missing some very obvious upgrades that would arguably make his life a lot easier.

In Wasp #4, both generations of Wasp - Janet and Nadia Van Dyne - are given the chance to show off their skills in the solo series. However, in trying to uncover the truth about Nadia's past, fans are shown a reality where Nadia is a major threat to her Avengers family.
