While perhaps not truly infinite, the Arrowverse has been revealed to be far larger than previously imagined, thanks to Crisis on Infinite Earths. The Arrowverse is one of the most expansive shared universes on television, and it's filled to the brim with DC Comics superheroes. It all started with Arrow in 2012 and then continued with The Flash in 2014, which was first set up in Arrow. From that point onward, Arrow became the breeding ground for dozens of new superheroes, crafting a multiverse as complex as that in the original DC Comics. This shared reality has grown to envelope not only the superhero shows of The CW and CW Seed (including animated series Vixen and The Ray), but even the DC Comics shows of other networks, like CBS's Supergirl (which moved to The CW with its second season) and NBC's Constantine.

Freedom Fighters: The Ray will return to the world of Crisis on Earth-X, but before the events of the latest Arrowverse crossover. Following the Vixen animated series on CW Seed, the Arrowverse is set to expand even more thanks to Freedom Fighters: The Ray. Long before the Nazi doppelgängers of Earth-X interrupted Barry and Iris' wedding, The Ray and his resistance movement were meant to arrive for a 6-part animated series. But along the way, a few big changes occurred.

A poster for the animated series Freedom Fighters: The Ray has been released, teasing a new Arrowverse adventure. While The CW has slowly been expanding their superhero roster on TV over the past few years, they've been doing something else exciting as well. While different studios try and craft massive cinematic universes that don't always connect, the Arrowverse has slowly been growing in both live action and animation.

Russell Tovey has been cast as DC superhero The Ray in this year's Arrowverse crossover. Tovey will also voice the character in his own animated series that will air on CW Seed, Freedom Fighters: The Ray. The Ray has been touted as the first gay superhero to headline his own series.

The new CW animated series Freedom Fighters: The Ray will feature cameos from across the Arrowverse and showcase the birth of a new superhero. Since the debut of Arrow, the so-called Arrowverse has been growing exponentially across The CW and their digital site CW Seed. The interconnected nature of the series not only allows for a massive annual crossover, but lets smaller cameos and team-ups occur along the way. And besides the four live-action shows, the animated side of the Arrowverse has been steadily growing.

The first footage from the CW Seed animated series Freedom Fighters: The Ray has arrived, showing the hero fighting Nazi versions of Arrow, Flash, and Supergirl. While the DC movies have moved to the shared universe model, the comic publishers TV output has taken a varied approach. Shows like Gotham and Krypton exist on their own, but a smaller universe has slowly emerged surrounding Arrow. With the premiere of Black Lightning next year, the Arrowverse will contain five live-action series (Constantine serves as a grandfathered-in sixth show). But thanks to the CW Seed, the universe has continued to grow in less visible ways.

Animated series Vixenmay have been a shot in the dark for CW Seed following the huge success of The CW network’s take on some of DC’s most-loved superheroes, but with the Arrowverse’s large fan base obviously getting behind the animated series and encouraging Arrow creators to bring Vixen (Megan Echikunwoke) to the live-action show for a guest spot earlier this year, super-producer Marc Guggenheim has now also been working on spin-off animated series Freedom Fighters: The Ray.

The CW has been building up its live-action DC Comics universe since the introduction of Arrow in 2012, which was followed by The Flash after Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) made his debut alongside Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell). Earlier this year, the Arrowverse added Legends of Tomorrow, which combines characters from both Arrow and The Flash with new heroes and villains, and this spring it was announced Supergirl would make the leap from CBS to The CW for the show's second season - which will debut this fall.
