Although Nicktoons continue to be a staple across Nickelodeon programming today, the 90s are often looked at as when Nicktoons were at their peak in both popularity and quality.

Developers Ludosity and Fair Play Labs have announced that Ren and Stimpy of The Ren & Stimpy Show fame will the Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl roster as a tag-team duo. Along with publishers GameMill Entertainment and Maximum Games, the two development studios announced the Nickelodeon-centric brawler earlier this summer, promising an experience that provides players with more than just a Smash game filled with Nicktoon characters.

There was a lot to process after Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl received its surprise announcement. A version of Super Smash Bros. with Nicktoons was not something anyone was expecting, yet some fans quickly realized how what an entertaining prospect it might be. One of the game's apparent strengths is that its character roster draws from the entirety of Nickelodeon's thirty-year history. Yet this means some characters may seem unfamiliar to younger fans. And while his appearance was met with glee from many millennials, no character scratched more heads than Powdered Toast Man.

Back in the day, it seems like kid-based networks could get away with way more than what is acceptable today. Subtle adult jokes or moments were above the young viewers' heads, but nonetheless, these shows were adored by all age groups. In particular, The Ren & Stimpy Show fits that.

While Rugrats and Doug targeted kids, John Kricfalusi's series included more mature content and jokes. Even though Kricfalusi left the show after two seasons, Ren & Stimpy ran for five seasons total and developed a large following during that time.
