The death of Qui-Gon Jinn in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menaceis no doubt one of the most pivotal moments in the Skywalker saga, but I still think it was a big mistake for Star Wars. Qui-Gon's death is perhaps one of the most analyzed moments in the Star Wars prequel trilogy, due to how influential this event was on Anakin Skywalker - particularly his eventual fall to the dark side. The Duel of the Fates is named for this reason, as it's a duel over the fate of Anakin's destiny - one that Qui-Gon, unfortunately, loses.

As Star Wars takes fans back before the prequel trilogy, Qui-Gon Jinn is facing a threat that will change the Jedi Order forever - leaving them open to Palpatine's corruption and control. The vast majority of Star Wars properties deal with the Jedi at war, however this time the franchise is trying something new, showing how the Jedi Order operated prior to the Clone Wars, and what turned them into the organization that Palpatine undermined and destroyed.

Qui-Gon Jinn lost his second duel with Darth Maul in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, and his preferred lightsaber combat form was a major factor in his defeat. Lightsaber combat has seven main forms, with Jedi and Sith learning the basic Form I (Shii-Cho), after which most would have a personalized style favoring one of the other six forms (or a combination of them, in some cases). Qui-Gon Jinn’s favored lightsaber combat form was Ataru (Form IV).

Star Wars' newest TV show, Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, just gave Qui-Gon Jinna surprising legacy, 25 years after his on-screen death in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace. Although Qui-Gon has had very little screen time in Star Wars, he has become increasingly important since his death. In addition to having a lasting effect on both Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker, Qui-Gon has had appearances in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Star Wars has revealed the real reason Qui-Gon Jinn never ed the Jedi Council, and it changes everything we thought we knew about his relationship with Obi-Wan Kenobi. Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan’s relationship was relatively short-lived on screen, but other Star Wars stories have provided more context for their somewhat strained but ultimately rewarding partnership. While Obi-Wan was a stickler for the rules when he was younger – though even he’d had doubts about his future with the Jedi – Qui-Gon Jinn was much more of a free-thinker, especially compared to the rest of the Jedi Council.
