It seems like there might be a PlayStation event coming in June, according to some industry insiders. The last major PlayStation event was the February State of Play earlier this year, where we got a first look at several remasters, DLC for Dive the Diver, a release date for Metal Gear Sold Delta: Snake Eater, and the announcement of Saros, a new IP from the Returnal studio, Housemarque, which will star actor Rahul Kohli. Final Fantasycreator Hironobu Sakaguchi possesses a uniquely iconic RPG series as his legacy, but according to his own comments in 2024, his favorite PlayStation title is something entirely different. While Final Fantasy originally built its legendary status on Nintendo systems, it made the leap to PlayStation when the disc-based PS1 offered more possibilities than the limited storage space of the Nintendo 64. Since then, the series has consistently appeared on Sony's consoles, and multi-platform releases haven't eroded a strong association between the brands.

Haven Interactive Studios' founder has left the company, potentially pointing to issues at the PlayStation-owned development house. Haven is in the midst of developing Fairgame$, an online shooter announced in 2023. Fairgame$ gameplay has yet to be revealed – only a CGI trailer – but it centers on heists, and seems to have survived PlayStation's recent wave of live-service cancellations.

The CEO and CFO of Sony have indicated that the PlayStation 5 may see a price hike soon due to US tarrifs. The tarrifs are fees imposed on importing goods into the US which on the surface are meant to encourage more US-produced goods to bolster the country's economy. In reality, though, the fees are causing many companies, including gaming giants like Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft, to scramble to make up the lost revenue.

Sony has a new team under the PlayStation Studios banner, and it's already working on a new multiplayer action game with live-service elements. The new studio is called teamLFG, and it was formed from within Bungie and is comprised of developers who previously worked on Destiny, Halo, League of Legends, Fortnite, and even social experiences like Roblox and Rec Room. Based on a statement from the newly formed team, which is based in Bellevue, WA, the developers are already hard at work on a "team-based action game" with a myriad of surprising influences.

In a good sign for a multi-platform future, several Xbox-owned titles did very well on the PlayStation 5 in April. Xbox's multi-platform strategy for releasing games has led to a lot of quality titles coming over to PlayStation, and the games are performing well financially. For example, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle's PS5 release set a new sales record for the title after it made its way to Sony's console, after spending around four months as an Xbox and PC exclusive title. Now, it looks like other Xbox-owned games are also doing well on the PS5, at least digitally.

A Blade Runner game was reportedly in development for the next-generation Xbox and what will presumably be called the PlayStation 6, but the unannounced game has been canceled. Blade Runner: Time to Live was targeting a late 2027 release window, and was being created by Until Dawn and The Quarry developer Supermassive Games.

The ninth console generation has been defined by fast loading times and the adoption of cutting-edge features like ray tracing, but the PlayStation 5 has lost much of the customization that its predecessors were beloved for. With a new PS5 update, however, classic PlayStation themes are returning permanently.

I recently got a PlayStation 5 Pro, and while the games are incredible, including The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered and Astro Bot, the system itself has some baffling issues like the approach to dynamic backgrounds. Dynamic backgrounds were big on the PS4, with the Tifa Final Fantasy 7 Remake one in particular being extremely popular, but they've mostly been absent on PS5 until now.

Without any official announcement, Sony has made a series of animated themes available for the PlayStation 5's home screen. Customization has been somewhat lacking this console generation; almost every piece of hardware has a generic home screen, with an array of games, a color gradient, and some ambient background music (if you're lucky). There's a reason for the change: home screens are a lot more interactive now, with game trailers, splash screens, and intro music available at the press of a button. Still, the ability to customize your home screen was sorely missed - until now, that is.
