While we've long awaited it, Halo movies have never come to fruition for the franchise, at least not as a feature-length theatrical or streaming release. However, there has been a big-budget streaming series that dropped on Paramount+ for fans to compare to the beloved video game. Paramount’s Halo series was among the very few successful video game adaptations on modern television, but the show was ultimately canceled ahead of its third season because of budgeting problems and financial cuts. This decision understandably left plenty of fans disappointed, as the show was really building towards an epic third season that would delve deeper into the mythos of the video games and pay off some long-standing plotlines. While it’s frustrating that Halo ended before introducing some great characters from the games, there are plenty of shows that can scratch the same itch.

It's been a pretty rough time for Halo since Halo Infinite launched, with fans criticizing its microtransaction-filled launch, and lamenting the cut content that was previously promised. While the developers at 343 Studios have, to an extent, managed to pull it back and regain some of the fanbase's trust again, it's hard not to be constantly reminded of Infinite'smissed potential. Of course, one solution to this problem is to sweep those failures under the rug, rebrand, and move in a new direction.

Almost three years after its most recent release, the Halofranchise is making a major change by switching from the proprietary Slipspace Engine to Unreal Engine 5. With Halo Infinite having suffered from extended development times and a somewhat mixed reception upon its 2021 release, 343 Industries is taking the series through a major change - one that can hopefully ease development troubles while still retaining the franchise's signature feel.

Whether it's better to read the Halo books in chronological order vs. release order will depend on whether the reader is interested in the overarching history of the far-reaching science fiction franchise, or whether they want to read how the series grew organically over the years. It's a bit difficult to explain the impact the Halo video game franchise has had on geek culture, but with some of the greatest video games of all time in its catalog, as well as comic books, live-action and animated television adaptations, and more, Halo is a key component of modern science fiction.

Paramount has officially canceled the live-action Halo TV show, and I'm upset that it won't get to adapt this one fan-favorite character. Paramount's Halo TV series was a mixed bag, with it spending its two seasons attempting to adapt some aspects of the game series' canon while also making some serious changes to the original Halo video games. It isn't surprising that Paramount has canceled Halo due to its poor reception and presumably massive budget, but I am upset that the show has been cut short before it could introduce a character that me and many other Halo fans adore.
