Wicked: For Good already looks like it's fixing the biggest complaint about the first movie. Ariana Grande's first movie after Wicked has been revealed, and it's a great move for her. Though the actor started her career as a teenager in the 2008 Broadway musical 13, she rose to fame for her role as Cat Valentine on the Nickelodeon sitcom Victorious (2010–2013), followed by its spin-off, Sam & Cat (2013–2014). From there, her focus shifted to her music career as she enjoyed a rapid ascent as a pop star with chart-topping hits like "The Way," "Thank U, Next," and "Bang Bang."

Led by Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande-Butera as the future Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good, respectively, Wicked would seem to have done almost nothing wrong, considering its box office numbers, critical acclaim, and Oscar nominations. However, it was at least interesting that this installment telling one half of the story is almost as long as the entire musical.

While 2025 has had its fair share of movie successes so far, one of the most hotly anticipated movies of the year is the Wicked: For Good, the sequel to one of last year's most culturally significant movies, Wicked. As the new movie inches closer to its release date later this year, the movie's marketing has begun to spool up, and the first footage was recently shown at CinemaCon, where Wicked: For Good was finally revealed with a great first look seen by multiple outlets, including Screen Rant.

Wicked has been on a long journey to make it to the big screen, with multiple proposed adaptations falling through due to production difficulties over more than 20 years. 2024'sWicked is a movie based on a show based on a novel, representing a story that has drastically evolved since Gregory Maguire published Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West in 1995. The Wicked movie makes many changes from the book because it is an adaptation of the smash-hit Broadway show, which itself is a loose adaptation that is considerably more family-friendly.

In 2024, Jon M. Chu's movie adaptation of Wickedmade a huge splash, and because of this, another musical spinoff of The Wizard of Oz should also get its time in the sun. Released at the end of last year, Wicked took audiences by storm, earning $752 million at the box office and scoring an 87% critics score and a 95% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Now, viewers are patiently awaiting the movie's sequel, Wicked: For Good, but in the meantime, they should consider checking out another Wizard of Oz musical that came out 50 years earlier.

Wicked was a massive hit despite and because of the small changes it made from the Broadway production, and Wicked: For Good looks to be making some similar decisions, one of which I can only be happy about. The second half of the two-part movie adaptation of the legendary Broadway musical will continue to focus on the relationship between Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda (Ariana Grande-Butera), which is increasingly strained as they are forced to be enemies amid conflict in Oz. Erivo and Grande both earned Oscar nominations for their performances in the 2025 awards season, but Wicked owes its success to an across-the-board amazing cast.
