In recent years, Disney has been building on a live-action remake trend, yet 2010's The Sorcerer's Apprenticewas one of Disney's earliest live-action reboots, and it was a box office bomb. Disney's live-action remakes have become increasingly commonplace, with The Little Mermaid premiering in 2023 and Snow White and Moana in the pipeline. However, Disney's live-action remakes began decades ago. The first was 1994's Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book, followed by 101 Dalmations and 102 Dalmations in 1996 and 2000 respectively. Disney found surprising source material for a blockbuster film with 2010’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. The film has a strange pedigree, beginning (in a roundabout way) with the Nicolas Cage film Next. Cage explains (via Yahoo!) that the movie, in which he plays a Las Vegas magician, gave him the urge to play a real wizard on screen. Cage took the idea to Next producer Todd Garner, who suggested that the idea could be made with Disney if it adapted one of their older properties.

As the ball dropped in Times Square and people everywhere sang inebriated versions of "Auld Lang Syne", it marked the end of a lukewarm movie year. With 557 movies released in 2010, some of them were truly good and others were excruciatingly bad. People could argue all day about what makes a movie truly bad, but thankfully we have the 31^st annual Golden Raspberry Awards to help us sort the chaff from the wheat.

When awards season rolls around every year there always seems to be a group of films that are tapped to pick up their share of the major awards. 2010 is no exception and this year the likes of Toy Story 3, Inception, The King's Speech, The Social Network, Black Swan andThe Fighter are among those which have won awards already and look likely to pick up some Oscars as well.
