Warning! Contains Spoilers for Chainsaw Man Chapter 135!
Denji may be one of Shonen Jump's most straightforward protagonists, but in its most recent chapter Chainsaw Man is turning everything fans thought they knew about him on its head, revealing that there are actually two versions of the Chainsaw Devil, "black" and "red". The manga is no stranger to shocking twists, as mangaka Tatsuki Fujimoto has proven time and time again, but the most recent chapters signal a change in how many fans view the nature of Devils which is the series' main focus.
In chapter #135 of Chainsaw Man, the Famine Devil is trying to convince Asa and Yoru to help the church of Chainsaw Man. The two are conflicted however since while Asa is starting to feel romantic feelings towards Chainsaw Man, Yoru still wants to kill him and take back some of her power. However, Fami points out that they can accomplish both goals simultaneously as Chainsaw Man is actually two different people, a "black" version and a "red" version. The red version is implied to be Denji's standard form as Chainsaw Man while the black version looks like the form he took when under Makima's control. Revealing them to be two distinct entities is a surprising twist that builds on some of Part 2's other major mysteries.
Chainsaw Man Actually Has Two Different Versions
One of the most mysterious plot threads in Part 2 has been the existence of a second Chainsaw Man. This new and villainous Chainsaw Man killed Asa's friend Yuko after she became a Devil hybrid and is implied not to be Denji, who was sleeping at the time. This could potentially be the black version of Chainsaw Man that Fami is referring to, although that raises a major question about how exactly this second version relates to Pochita, the actual Chainsaw Devil that Denji bonded with at the beginning of the series.
Fami implies that if Asa and Yoru help the church in eliminating the other Devils, thus making everyone forget about Chainsaw Man, this will turn Denji into a normal human being (which could mean unbonding him from Pochita and undoing his Devil hybridization), leaving only the black version, implying that version is the Chainsaw Devil itself. This aligns well with when Denji was trapped under Makima's control, as she only viewed him as the Chainsaw Devil itself, which is what led to her defeat at the end of Part 1. Thus, Denji's bond with Pochita must fundamentally alter the Chainsaw Devil's manifestation in some way beyond just giving it a different body and mind to use its powers with. The red version is thus potentially a product of Denji's subconscious idea of what a Chainsaw should be.
Chainsaw Man's Two Versions Fundamentally Change Denji's Powers
It is unclear at this point what the exact difference between the black and red versions of Chainsaw Man is, but Part 2 will surely be exploring that further as it continues. Famine states clearly that the red and the black Chainsaw Man are two different persons, teasing another big mystery waiting to be unveiled. This is yet another sign that while Asa may be the new hero of Chainsaw Man's second part, Denji is still a fundamental piece of the story. And if Chainsaw Man continues to dive into the exact nature of Denji's power, it could continue to reveal new facets of his abilities that fans never expected.
