With the show having finally made its way to theaters after a five-year development, H. Jon Benjamin thinks the wait for The Bob's Burgers Movie 2 will be long. The 2022 movie acted as a feature-length expansion of the long-running Fox animated comedy, seeing the Belcher family wrapped up in a bizarre summer adventure as a sinkhole opens outside their restaurant, threatening them financially while also uncovering the skeleton of an unsolved murder victim. Co-written and co-directed by creator Loren Bouchard, the movie was a critical hit, but underperformed at the box office, grossing just over $34 million against its $38 million production budget.

While speaking with Screen Rant for the Archer series finale, Benjamin was asked about the possibility of a Bob's Burgers Movie 2. Though noting he's not heard any talks for a sequel, he remains hopeful that it will come to fruition, while also acknowledging the wait may again be long due to Bouchard and co-writer Nora Smith's focus on running the show as it continues its run on Fox. I don't know at all. What I do know, it was very difficult to write a movie and keep the show going. Bob's Burgers, the writing staff has kind of been with the show since the very beginning. And Loren Bouchard and Nora Smith, who wrote the movie, also have to run the show at the same time. I think that's a tall task, so it's probably very hard to do, but I imagine they'll try. I hope they do, it was really fun, and I agree with you, it came out really well.

Will A Bob's Burgers Movie 2 Happen?

Benjamin and his co-stars have previously expressed their hopes for a Bob's Burgers Movie 2 to happen, with Bouchard and Smith also remaining open to developing a sequel prior to the first movie's release. Given how seamlessly the movie was able to expand on its TV show without disrupting any major canon, much like The Simpsons Movie before it, the door does seem wide open for a follow-up should the creative team find another story to tell with the quirky family and their friends. The biggest deciding factor of the sequel's chances will be Disney's interest in producing another movie.

If looking at the first Bob's Burgers Movie's performance, the chances seem split down the middle for whether the studio would be keen on developing a sequel. The financial response proved to be surprisingly underwhelming, though wasn't entirely poor when considering it opened against the blockbuster legacy sequel Top Gun: Maverick and that it retained a spot in the box office top 10 through six weeks. Additionally, with it garnering a very strong 87% "Certified Fresh" approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and landing in the top five of most-watched movies across streaming platforms in the first two weeks of its home release, it's clear the movie did spark the interest of longtime fans of the show.

Given Disney has endured a lackluster run at the box office with their animated projects, this could be seen as a hindrance to The Bob's Burgers Movie 2's chances at being made. However, considering the original movie was produced on a smaller budget than the likes of the recently released Wish, and the studio bringing back the Frozen, Toy Story and Zootopia franchises in the hopes of regaining ground at the box office, Bouchard and his team could very well find a way to convince Disney to bring the Belcher family back to the big screen. The sequel could even prove to be a genuine hit for the studio should they elect to find a release window that avoids too much major competition, opening the door for a Christmas or Halloween-set adventure, as the Bob's Burgers show has frequently explored.
