The Bayonetta 3, which is a Nintendo Switch exclusive.

Viola is a young witch-in-training, accompanied by a large, demonic cat-looking demon known as Cheshire that she can seemingly summon at will. The world of Bayonetta has been invaded by part-human creatures known as Homunculi that seem to have been destroying other universes, before making their way to the one Bayonetta resides in. Bayonetta will also be ed by other versions of herself (seemingly ripped from other timelines or universes), suggesting that the threat may be multiversal.

While it isn't much to go off of for the story, the latest Bayonetta 3 trailer did reveal a little more about Viola and Cheshire, including a little about how they play. Appearance-wise, Viola looks a little like a gender-swapped Vergil from Devil May Cry even down to a signature katana, which wouldn't be the first Devil May Cry reference in Bayonetta. A witch-in-training, Viola appears to be able to tap into the same Umbral magic as Bayonetta, albeit in a less experienced capacity. Moreso, players will also be able to see a bit more about how her equipment, including the katana, compares to Bayonetta's.

Bayonetta 3's Viola Is A Witch-In-Training With Cheshire As Her Demonic Summon

Baynetta 3 Viola and Cheshire

Viola's equipment greatly differs from Bayonetta's. Having no firearms, Viola seemingly relies on her katana and what appear to be exploding kunai or spears. Additionally, she appears to be sporting a grappling hook that allows her to swing from stage to stage. Being an Umbral Witch-in-training, Viola can tap into the same demonic powers as Bayonetta. In the trailer, players can see her using witch-time to slow, not stop, time to deflect bullets with her katana. Additionally, she can inscribe demonic circles to summon Cheshire to complement her katana attacks or save her from falling. It is unknown whether Cheshire will be playable in the promised Bayonetta 3 demon kaiju battles. However, it is worth noting that her shadow is not demonic, suggesting that she has not made a permanent pact with a demon much as Bayonetta has with Madama Butterfly. However, Cheshire may be taking this role.

While the story is still too early to make definitive statements, there is much to speculate about Viola's character. Given that she appears to know much more about the Homunculus threat than even Rodin, she may be originally from an alternate universe or timeline that has already fallen to the Homunculus hordes. Additionally, Luka, a returning character, seems to recognize Viola in some capacity, potentially hinting at some sort of past between these characters within the primary universe. Given that not much is known about Luka, it is difficult to speculate on this but it does offer promise for both of their characters.

So far, that is everything currently known about the enigmatic Viola and Cheshire. Viola looks to be an interesting change to the Bayonetta formula and it is interesting to see that she may be one of the primary playable characters alongside Bayonetta. The Bayonetta 3 release date trailer offered much to be hyped about regardless. Viola is already offering a fresh change of pace from the older Bayonetta titles and many players are excited to see more of her in Bayonetta 3.
