As one of the greatest heroes in the DC Universe, Batman has seen his style copied by several people. Some characters have earned the distinction of being an ‘Anti-Batman’, meaning they use similar fighting styles, tactics, or imagery as the Dark Knight for less-than-honorable reasons.

Over the years, the number of Anti-Batmen has grown with plenty of villains and anti-heroes adopting Batman’s traits for their own wicked purposes. But not every Anti-Batman is created equal and some are far better at using Bruce Wayne’s gimmick than others. See 15 of the best Anti-Batmen and how effective they are.

15 Man-Bat

Kirk Langstrom is an ‘Anti-Batman’ in the most literal sense of the phrase. While Langstrom wasn’t trained by the world’s greatest martial artists nor does he fight using impressive gadgetry, he does frighten the masses in the guise of a bat (Granted, only because he transforms into one) But while in his Man-Bat form, he’s quite terrifying, and lethal when the situation calls for it.

14 Arkham Knight

Arkham Knight DC

One of Batman’s lesser-known copycats was born in the system that houses his most infamous villains. Astrid Arkham, daughter of head doctor Jeremiah Arkham, grew up in the Asylum, growing close with the many inmates. Blaming Batman for her mother’s death, Astrid took on the guise of the Arkham Knight to avenge her and launched an insurrection to get rid of the Dark Knight for good.

13 Failsafe

Failsafe DC Batman villain.

One of the more recent Anti-Batmen is a creation of Bruce Wayne’s own design. Failsafe was created by Batman as a contingency in case Bruce ever took a life, a measure which activated upon the assumed death of the Penguin. Failsafe is Batman taken to the ultimate extreme. It plans far in advance, it’s relentlessly determined and uses whatever means it must to accomplish its goals, including subjugating Gotham to track down its target.

12 Wrath

Wrath DC

Though not one of Batman’s most well-known enemies, nearly everything about Wrath is a dark mirror of the hero. He lost his parents at a young age, committed himself to a life-long vow, and even took on a sidekick to help him in his war. Elliot Caldwell also rivals Batman when it comes to gadgets and weaponry, though he’s never been able to carve out a permanent place in the hero’s rogues’ gallery.

11 Jason Todd

Red Hood Superhero DC

Jason Todd was Batman’s second Robin, but he was the first one to use the Dark Knight’s training for awful purposes. After coming back to life, Jason adopted the identity of Red Hood and used his detective skills and keen fighting abilities to wage a deadly war on Gotham’s criminal elements. He even briefly adopted a more superhero-like gimmick to try and replace Batman when Bruce was lost in time after Final Crisis.

10 Catman

A bloodied Catman wearing his battered suit in DC's comics.

Don’t doubt his name, Catman is more than a knockoff of Batman with a dash of Catwoman. Thomas Blake is a villain that reinvented himself after spending years as a joke. After years of honing his skills, Blake became a member of the Secret Six and used his tracking and fighting abilities to hunt down anything he was paid to. Catman even showed Batman how much he evolved by fighting the hero to a standstill.

9 Killer Moth

If any villain has earned the right to call themselves an ‘Anti-Batman’, it’s Drury Walker. Walker believed that criminals deserved their own champion and set out to be the criminal version of the Dark Knight. During Killer Moth’s early years, he utilized a lot of equipment similar to Batman, such as a Mothcave and a Mothmobile. While he’s pulled back in recent years, Killer Moth made a name for himself as the first true opposite of Batman.

8 Azrael

Comic book : Azrael wears his armored Batman suit from Knightfall.

One of the few Anti-Batman who actually had the opportunity of being the real thing. Jean-Paul Valley was groomed to be the Order of St. Dumas’ elite killer, but Bruce Wayne helped him find a better path. And while Valley got the chance to become Batman, he couldn’t shake his conditioning and actually killed people during his tenure as the Caped Crusader.

7 Prometheus

Prometheus from DC clenching fists

Prometheus has more than earned his designation as an Anti-Batman. Prometheus is the greatest example of how terrifying it would be if Batman used his skills with prep-time for evil. Prometheus is an amazing mastermind who once successfully attacked the Justice League and almost managed to beat Superman in the process. He also blew up Star City, killing an untold number of civilians and making him one of the deadlier Anti-Batmen.

6 Deathstroke

Deathstroke holding two swords in a DC Comic

While Deathstroke isn’t traditionally a Batman villain, he’s gone up against the hero numerous times over the years. He’s also regarded as an Anti-Batman due to his intense level of planning and his strong fighting capabilities. There’s hardly a person in the world that can disarm him and very few people that he can’t kill. While he doesn’t adopt any bat imagery, Slade exemplifies the core idea of an Anti-Batman.
